Biography

Catherine married first John Fish. Children, list possibly incomplete:

  • Huldah Fish b. 1771
  • Enos Fish b. say 1773
  • Triphena Fish b. 1775
  • Asa Fish b. 1777
  • Susannah Fish

Catherine Du Bois then married Joel Garrison. [1] Child:

  • John Garrison

She was called Catherine Garrison in the 1794 will of her father Jacob.

On 31 August 1805, James Garrison of Upper Alloways Creek, blacksmith, and Elizabeth his wife sold to Catherine Garrison of Deerfield in Cumberland County, widow eight acres at Pittsgrove. The lot had been "set off to James Garrison ... in making division of the real estate of Joel Garrison late of the place aforesaid deceased."[2] On 10 May 1822, Catherine Garrison widow of Pittsgrove Township sold that same eight acres.[3]

On 28 November 1807, Hannah Garrison of Lower Penns Neck, spinster, sold 7.5 acres of land at Pittsgrove which was set off to her in the division of the real estate of Joel Garrison of Pittsgrove, deceased.[4]

On 4 December 1822, the heirs of Catherine Garrison late of the township of Pittsgrove deceased deeded 7.5 acres of land at Centerville that they inherited from Catherine, who had died intestate.[5] Catherine's heirs and their spouses named in the deed are (heir listed first, in each case):

  • Enos Fish and Esther his wife
  • Asa Fish and Rachel his wife
  • Holday Roberts and her husband Pancoast Roberts
  • Triphena Niewkirk and Andrew Niewkirk, her husband
  • Susannah [Fults?]
  • John Garrison and Mary his wife

Research Notes

The 1822 land record cited above proves that Catherine married a Fish and a Garrison. John Fish's wife was named Catherine in his father Benjamin's 1772 will. However, no documentary evidence seems to be publically cited which names this Catherine a Dubois.

Because no other Garrisons were named in the will, it would seem that Joel had an earlier wife, the mother of sons David, Joel, and possibly James, Mary and Hannah (further research is needed to determine if Mary and Hannah were alive in 1822; James seemingly had died by 1814 and had a daughter Hannah, but it is unclear if Hannah was still living in 1822).

No record seems to provide direct evidence that Catherine's Garrison husband was Joel Garrison, but the land records cited here provide strong indirect evidence for this identification.
